EMMAUS, PA and NEW YORK, NY, August 26, 2009 - Organic Gardening magazine, published by Rodale Inc., the AVEENO® Brand and Nature's Path have selected community gardens in Chicago, Philadelphia, and Atlanta to participate in the 2009 WaterWorks Project, in cooperation with the American Community Gardening Association. The nationwide initiative will award these three community gardens with water conservation systems and grants for a garden beautification day and a community education day. The goal of the WaterWorks Project is to help improve the vitality, appearance, and sustainability of community gardens throughout the country.

Organic Gardening created the WaterWorks Project in 2007 to raise awareness about water conservation and provide vital resources and education to community gardens nationwide. Now in its third year, the WaterWorks Project continues its mission with three deserving gardens, with a total of 23 gardens and communities beautified to date.

  • •  In Chicago, Growing Power's Jackson Park Urban Farm is a half-acre community garden and model urban farm headed by MacArthur Fellow and former NBA star Will Allen.

  • •  In Philadelphia, Henry Got Crops! is part of the nation's largest agricultural high school-the Saul High School of Agriculture, a Title 1 inner city public magnet school that sits on 150 acres in Fairmount Park.

  • •  In Atlanta, the Edgewood Community Learning Garden is a new garden project being spearheaded by several community organizations and charter schools in an area of the city that is underserved and has very limited access   to fresh produce.

All of these gardens exist to provide a service to their communities. Not only do they supply fresh, locally grown food to area residents, they also offer strong educational and vocational training to members of the community.

The AVEENO® Brand will work closely with Organic Gardening to provide beautification grants of $30,000 to the three recipient gardens. These grants will be used for garden revitalization and enhancements such as construction of walkways and garden structures, installation of raised beds, plants, tools and garden equipment. Each community garden will be covered on and

"Water is our most precious resource, and gardeners in particular are all too aware of the need to conserve and sustainably manage water," said Ethne Clarke, Editor-in-Chief of Organic Gardening magazine. "Through their many wonderful projects, community gardens across the USA inspire us all to make the best use of what we have today to guarantee a healthy and livable tomorrow. Organic Gardening and Rodale Inc. are proud to have the AVEENO® Brand and Nature's Path partnering with us to encourage and reward our WaterWorks honorees."

"The AVEENO® Brand is committed to bringing communities together by helping to beautify their natural surroundings," says Michael Marquis, the AVEENO® Brand Group Product Director. "We rely on Mother Nature to provide natural ingredients, including oatmeal, shiitake, lavender, chamomile, soy and feverfew, to formulate the ACTIVE NATURALS® technology in our skincare products that optimize skin health and beauty, which is why this program is so important to us. We are thrilled to be a part of this cause for the third year in a row, offering people across the country a chance to be inspired by natural beauty." "Our vision has always been to be a trusted name for organic foods in every home; socially responsible, environmentally sustainable and economically viable. Partnering with Organic Gardening's WaterWorks project seemed a natural fit," explained Nature's Path Founder and CEO Arran Stephens. "Nature's Path sees the WaterWorks program as fundamental way to support the increased availability of fresh, organic foods in North America, and to connect people with the activity of growing those foods that are so vital to the health of people and the world. We are proud to be a partner in the WaterWorks program."

"During economic times like we face, many marketers are tabling philanthropic efforts. It is great to have partners like the AVEENO® Brand and Nature's Path, who understand the importance of supporting this highly impactful program," said Jeff Tkach, National Advertising Director of Organic Gardening. "The WaterWorks Project is a great way for all of the brands involved to put their core values into action by helping to beautify gardens and educate communities about living in a more sustainable manner."
